The Secret Of The Sculptures By Monika Thakur Book Review

“You don’t know all this yet , perhaps you do not have all your powers yet . But be sure , they exceed mine . What I searched for , found you “

It took me two whooping days to read this book and the whole time I couldn’t predict what would happen next , which trust me is something refreshing for me. Time and again we come across those books which are different and leave us spellbound with their story weaving techniques, well this book did that to me . I enjoyed every moment of reading it . It tried mingling the present with the secrets of the past . It entwined a beautiful legend along with the protagonists present making you hope for more .

So the story revolves around Maitreyi and her best friend forever Aditi , it showcases Delhi during the summer break with Maitreyi back home from a foreign university and Aditi working as an intern at a museum under her college professors. The beginning is all based on chance encounters. With Maitreyi bumping into a Mr. Seth in her airplane , and then eventually everywhere . Our protagonist has this inkling that Mr. Seth had more to him then what could be seen , and an ability to look inside people. The mystery starts uncovering when both the girls go to the museum for a launching party of a newly found idol , with a mesmerizing story of a warrior princess , kingdom and war to credit its origin . And then eventually it gets lost with the  girls being at the wrong place at the wrong time .

There are supernatural elements at play in this book , which makes it moreover interesting. Such as teleporting , visions , sudden showcase of past events virtually . All in all it the book keeps you enthralled and mesmerized . The book was definitely a page turner with various interesting characters in the mix with a perfect blend of Indian mythology.

And no two college going girls can be left without  guys to partner them up with . So the two girls along with the guys who like them (and vice versa) go on a journey from Delhi to the hills of Belapur trying to undercover the thief and the story behind the idol . There being a lot of running away from the goons and trying to find the culprit.

But I personally felt that at some points the book got a little slow , and it felt as if the guys for the protagonists  wanted to be a part of the action without the girls being there, in a way trying to save them , which at points irritated me , so the comebacks the girls gave were perfect . Because more than girl/boy there is always power in numbers in an adventure .  And the protagonist has to be there everywhere (she’s of high importance)

So if you want to try a mystery, adventure book with the Indian context read this , because trust me it wont disappoint . It had the perfect combinations of emotions , come backs, situation and dialogues with the end making you want more . I personally feel that there should be a sequel because there is a lot more that can be unraveled .

“put a passably decent face on a guy and her friend would be insensible to all other deficits”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE BOOK ?

How Airbed & Breakfast became Airbnb ?

Temple-Airbnb-Logo

“Creativity is the solution to all problems”- Brian Chesky , co Founder and CEO at Airbnb

For those who don’t know, Airbnb is an online marketplace where people can lease or rent short term lodging. The $31 billion company does not own any lodging but is merely a broker.

So how did two unemployed friends(3 founder joining a little later) became the founders of a billion dollar company.

The story starts at Rhode Island School of Design where Brian Chesky met Joe Gebbia. On the day of graduation Joe says to him ‘Brian, one day we are going to be entrepreneurs’. A few years passed and one day in 2007 both of them quit their jobs and decide to start a company together. With absolutely no business idea and a $1000 in bank account and a sleeping bag Brian drove to San Francisco. Turned out the rent for Joe’s apartment was $1150. Strangled with debt they thought of an idea to provide accommodation in their apartment to people coming for a IDSA( Industrial Designers Society Of America )conference in town at the rates that were far less than an hotel. In 24 hours they built a website called Airbedandbreakfast.com and mailed the top design bloggers and in overnight Airbed and breakfast was at the top of the blogger’s page.

An idea that came 48 hours ago to save them from cash crunch was now live on the internet. To their surprise people from all over the world were writing to them. Finally 3 people who came to attend the conference , one of whom was an Indian slept on the airbeds in their living room and became their first guest.

It was then that it struck Brian what if you could book someone’s home the way you book a hotel anywhere in the world.

In 2008 they incorporated the company as Airbed and breakfast. They even called upon their “former roommate ” and “brilliant engineer” Nathan Blecharczyk, to join as the third co-founder of the new venture.  To fund the site they created special edition breakfast cereals with presidential candidates Obama and John McCain as the box designs. At $40 a box they generated $30,000 for company’s incubation. All of this created a buzz and in 2009 Y Combinator invested a whooping $20000 in the company as an initial investment ( they had joined Y Combinator’s 2009 Winter Class) . They were further funded by SEQUOIA CAPITAL . The name was now changed to Airbnb and it offered not only rooms and apartments but also castles, manors, boats, tree houses, private island and even an IGLOO, yes you heard it right.

Today Airbnb is the No.1 lodging website in UK. Many people who were on the brink of losing their homes through foreclosure due to financial hardship, have come to depend on Airbnb for additional income. It can be said that it has been a blessing in disguise to various people out there , just as it was one for the founders who got to live their “one day” dream by solving an intricate  problem .

but you need to know that the story was not as rosy as it seems and many a days they had to live on cereals only

1 Mega Year of Blogging !

Hello there everyone ,

As companies write a review letter every year for their shareholders  , I am going to try my hand at one too for my viewers . Have to say that this one year has felt extremely productive due to this piece of 21 st centaury Diary Writing Model. I have got to learn so much about myself , the writing skills I possess and have also learned so much from the fellow bloggers whose blogs I have read. So here are some of the things I have learned , and would love to share with the new bloggers out there and the ones who are secretly trying to push oneself to start one –

  1. Write about what you love ( as I love both the business ups and downs , and books which make me a more complete person . I keep on juggling between both of them. just don’t make it Chandni Chowk )
  2. Don’t write for the views , but because those topics and words bring a life in you .
  3. Go and read other blogs , follow them , like their posts . ( they will definitely come and view yours too)
  4. Don’t ever forget to edit the categories and tags ( I didn’t know about it for the first 6 months )
  5. Share as much as you can ( never write “please read” , just let the link come in front of their eyes)

and here are few of my stats –

  1. followers –  114( as of this post)
  2. Number of blogs posted- this will be the 34 th post

And here is this proposal for everyone out there , if you want to write a guest blog (on my blog) or maybe write one with me , feel free to contact , focusing mainly on the business world ( finance , investment , startups , companies . their models), and books which will always be a part of who we are .

Thank You VIEWERS for your TIME & PATIENCE ,

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Series & More

20289931_1781329308574298_1009236491_n.jpg

I love this book series , and this might be the first chick-lit book series I have ever read , without any hesitation or break . Lara Jean ‘s character is a real girl’s character , how we truly behave at home , how we all have troubling but loving siblings ( in her case two sisters, she’s the one in middle ) , and how family will always remain FAMILY. It shows a relationship which feels real and practical , and how our own dreams are supposed to our own choices , because we have to live with them at the end of the day.

This blog is for my fellow bloggers and the reading blogging fraternity to share that Jenny Han has just declared that a MOVIE is going to be made in the first book. How awesome can this news be . I am so so happy , this series was my best summer read and I am delighted.

Now just to give a synopsis of all the three parts in short ( for the ones who haven’t read and for the ones who want to remember its magic )

1.To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

We all have crushes( it comes with being a teenager) and so does Lara Jean , but to get over them she writes love letters to those 5 guys , and stuffs them up in a box given to her by her late mother. One day all these letters end up being send to their recipient’s. And here begins the story . The real culprit being her younger sister Kitty . And then follows the answers of these boys. The main guy is Peter , her ex best friends ex boyfriend , who was one of her good friends in middle school . They both start a fake relationship ( for their own reasons) and you all know how that ends. With her sisters ex boyfriend Josh ( he gets one of the letter ) and Genevieve( the ex girlfriend) still in the mix.

2. P.S. I Still Love You

The next book starts with Lara Jean and Peter trying a hand at their relationship for real this time . And in comes the problems associated with a relationship , the major one of them being jealousy. Here in the mix are Genevieve( the ex girlfriend) who in middle school was Lara Jeans bestfriend and John Ambrose McClaren( he got the letter too) , who was her crush during the middle school and the perfect guy every girl wants to fall for. The book ends with Lara Jean and Peter reconciling and deciding to give one another their hearts without holding anything back , as they truly love each other.

3.Always and Forever, Lara Jean

This book is like a final chapter to their story , which  you would want never  to end . It concentrates on them setting their sites on college , getting accepted and all that the anticipation of future gives a person , uncertainty. Though initially they plan to go to the same place , Lara Jean doesn’t get accepted there , but gets a way better college . Its about how beautiful first love is with the question whether it will also be the last , how everyone thinks breaking up is the best thing for them( mainly her elder sister and Peters mom) , but at the end of the day they  do what they feel is right for there hearts and hence decide on long distance . The ending chapters of this book are perfect

The actor and actress selected for Lara Jean and Peter are Lana Candor and Noah Centineo .

So fellow bloggers what did you think about this book series ?

And the ones who haven’t read , do you want to ?

And which was your favourite summer read ?

AND YAAAY! we are getting a MOVIE . How AWESOME can that be  ♥♥♥

THE WRONG SIDE OF RIGHT BY JENN MARIE THORNE! Book Review

“LETS LOOK AT THIS FROM ANOTHER ANGLE”

This is a book where you are supposed to shut out the chaos happening behind and concentrate on the cute couple (the guy is the president’s son and the girl is the daughter of the senator fighting for the president’s seat in the election). This being one of the best set ups for YA literature(in my opinion)

So a little synopsis. Kate’s mom dies so she ends up living with her aunt and uncle, but suddenly one day on the media it’s declared that she is the illegitimate daughter of the guy running for president, and then starts the roller coaster of getting a new family. A new dad, mom, twin younger brother sister and a grandma and lot of drama that comes with being there. And then enters Andy.

He’s just a guy that you like, who has flaws and accepts them, hates drama and likes Kate a lot! And the best part about him is that he never gives up . So it’s a simple (but complicated) story which was fun to read and I personally finished it in 5 hours and I loved it! How it discusses the complex issue of finding your father (really finding him), accepting a stepmom and falling in love with your new found siblings along with a few friend and boy drama ( what’s a book without it ) .

The book did go to deep in the president election process drama which could have been minimalized ! its character development was juggernaut.

And the best part is the dad doesn’t like Andy. So boys whether you are a president’s son or not, dads never like the boys who capture their daughters hearts. So don’t take it too personally.

THE ACCIDENTAL BILLIONARES BY BEN MEZRICH BOOK REVIEW

“Information is meant to be shared. Pictures are meant to be looked at “

We all have heard the name of the movie THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and as far as I remember I loved it and till date have watched it a gazillion times (partial blame on Andrew Garfield). So this is the book on which the movie was based and it’s better with a garrulous description of the Silicon Valley and none other than the Harvard University.

What amazed me was Mark Zuckerberg’s brilliance and idea which surpassed all the ideas for social networking in the early 2000’s. How he eliminated all the faults present in Orkut, Friendster and gave us all something amazing to connect with our friends (because after all they are the most important).

Mr. Ben Mezrich has written the book brilliantly. He has kept the characters out there and left it on us who to judge and who to not. Capturing Mark Zuckerberg’s and Eduardo Saverins friendship , its ups and down, how friendship and business muddled together is though easy on the look but tough to maintain , entrance of Sean Parker( the guy who started the hacking battle for free music streaming) , the amazing Peter Thiel ( and Facebooks early investor) and last but not the least the Winklevoss twins.

So it’s a must read for those who want a glimpse of this billion dollar company, its founding, its bumpy ride, battle between cofounders, every investor wanting a part of this new found baby and last but not the least Mark Zuckerberg who did everything to keep Facebook for what it stands .

JMC , MERCATUS – DURJOY DATTA

untitled

So finally I got to hear a novelist whose books have meant more than a tick mark on the list of the books read in a year. The radiance and charisma from his words spoken on the stage was similar to how he enchants in the books. The way he tries to break through various topics with such an easy language. He definitely has a funny bone. Well the audience did enjoy his company JMC being an all-girls college. And thank you Mercatus- the marketing society of Jmc for getting him.! 🙂

Something that touched me was when he said there’s always this friend we are deeply in love with but have no idea about. That was the same he felt at 24 for reading books. It was then that he actually realized he was in love with reading books. That after working at American Express at the end of the day he was missing reading, not writing. Because writing was a supplementary which came after reading.

He shared various small stories. How his parents had considered him to be a “good boy” but were shocked with the happenings in his life after reading his first book. Thinking ki ladka ab to haat se nikal gaya hai. How writing happened because he just felt that he had more happening in life than with anyone of his age, how the blogger community ended up persuading him to write a book.

In his ending note he beautifully said at the end of the day we have to find that thing that we love and want to come back home too. So it was an experience worth getting up at 8:00 am  !

HOW TO FALL IN LOVE BY CECELIA AHERN♥♥ BOOK REVIEW

“Moments are precious; sometimes they linger and other times they’re fleeting, and yet so much could be done in them; you could change your mind, you could save a life and you could even fall in love.”

This book is more about how to fall in love with Cecelia Ahern and the not so perfect world she creates with her flair of writing. So whether it be her quirky humor, or her relatable characters; she surprises you every single time. In this book she has molded a cliché into a heartwarming story of loving oneself.

So Christie runs a recruitment firm, and a self-business of being a therapist for everyone in need. Two miracles change her life. The first one being where she tries to stop a man from committing suicide, in which she end up failing. And the second event being a suicide again where the strong sense of Deja-vu and heart ache makes her stop Adam from making a decision which has no reverse effects. She saves him from death, but gets an ultimatum of two weeks to save him from life.

There’s this term bleeding your pen while writing, this book has an effect of bleeding your emotions. It’s a perfect Cecelia Ahern book. It has all her personal elements in the right proportion. So different and so innate in its own-self. If I ever end up writing a book, I would dedicate it to her, because her beautifully woven words have given me a push of weaving one of my own.

The books not just a one-time read but has a multiplier effect attached to it. So please go and grab this book, a basket full of raw emotions, sadness, pressure, death, laughs, smiles, protectiveness, heartbreak, closure, love and above all life.

♥4.5 stars♥

FILL IN BOYFRIEND by KASIE WEST BOOK REVIEW

51bshpugrel-_sx350_bo1204203200_

“he didn’t hurt you , did he? His voice was surprisingly angry.

“no well , he just hurt my heart”

This was my first book by KASIE WEST and I am definitely star struck with her writing. A short synopsis – GIA has to make her friends meet her boyfriend at her prom who dumps her last minute at the parking lot, panicked she sees another guy there whom she requests to be the “fill-in-Bradley” (Bradley being the name of the guy who just dumped her).Creating a facetious(sham). Then as you can all guess (it’s very obvious), the story is about how Gia and “fill-in-Bradley” fall in love.

It’s just not a love story but more than that. Its about how an equivocate(a lie) can sometimes be the best thing which can happen to people. About finding our own selves, whether our friends describe who we are, or is our generation obsessed with likes and retweets. It taught me that vanilla is the most loved ice-cream flavor in the world. That whenever people say “I’m fine” they are definitely going through something which is tearing their heart apart.

It’s a story dwelling on friendship (where Gia makes a new friend: someone she didn’t consider her type), love (the stranger guy would turn change every girls boyfriend goals), understanding between siblings, and lastly relationship with parents. It touches many topics beautifully making you fall in love with the book and its perfectly imperfect characters. It’s one of those books where one read can’t be satisfying enough to fill the space it has created in your heart. That fatalism is indeed true.

My reaction when I finished was “I never expected it to have depth and be light-hearted at the same time”.

♥definitely 5 stars.

NEW DELHI WORLD BOOK FAIR

c1ttpfnxcaaf1rw

“Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light”–Vera Nazarian

So this was my first book fair and it was all that I expected (it didn’t leave me disappointed).I could see all around me people trying to handle the weight of books they had purchased and those they wanted to. It had becomes a mad house till the evening.

The highlight of the day for me was when I could sit for the open panel of MR.DEEPAK NAYYAR (chief economic advisor of India in the early 90’s and vice chancellor of DU in the early 2000’s).He talked about his new book Employment, Growth and Development: Essays on a Changing World Economy. The Q&A session was very interesting where he talked about Indian agriculture, demonitisation and relation between growth and jobs. When I went and told him I would definitely read the book, he said “I right for the young minds”.

So if you are someone who wants to start reading this definitely a place from where you can choose as there is a plethora of books present there. And if you are an avid reader this is not an opportunity worth missing (you get the best deals). You can errant (wander) and still feel equanimity.
